REMEMBER SAFETY FIRST

Before you begin, if the location of the windows is very difficult or the surface of the ground is unstable or dangerous for any reason and you doubt your ability to complete the task safely it is best to get a professional in to carry out the task.

Use the right tools.

Your results will dramatically improve instantly if you use the right equipment. You expect a quality mechanic to use quality tools on your car to get quality results. It follows that you need to use quality tools to get quality results when window cleaning. Make sure you have:

- A wide bucket of cool water
- 12- 4 inch Squeegee with new blade
- A mop to apply water to window surface
- Detergent. There are many ‘trade secrets’ and some even use just water. If you are going to use a detergent it needs to be soft on the hands and one that creates minimal soap suds.
- A clean rag free of lint and fluff
- A pole attachment for squeegee
- A new or well maintained Ladder

Horizontal Strokes – Preferred method of window cleaning

1. Starting in one of the top corners of the window, the horizontal stroke crosses the breadth of the window. Always wipe dry the squeegee blade with a dry cloth towel. Then begin the next stoke with a slight overlap. Professional window washers overlap their strokes so as to ensure that no part of the window is missed.

2. Hold the squeegee on a slight angle forcing the water down the window. This makes gravity your friend and minimises water slipping over the top of the squeegee causing water mark lines.

Vertical strokes – Method used when space is limited

Vertical strokes are more difficult because it is often harder to control the blade for the length of the window but this is acceptable where window space is limited. Each stoke should begin at the top of the window and over lap slightly.

Wipe around window edges with cloth.

To finish off each window, wipe around the edges of the window with a dry clean cloth towel.. It will only take a moment but will make a huge difference to the final presentation. Make sure the frame of the window is cleaned and dried because dirty run off water from the upper window may slowly dribble down onto the windows below and quickly ruin your good work.
